It's a pleasure to connect with Crystal Rice to learn more about her motivations, her creative process, and how her experience in pediatrics has influenced her writing. We should engage in a dialogue with the author to elucidate the narrative that underpins the narrative.
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Who are the authors, artists, or thinkers that have influenced your writing the most, and how have they shaped your work?
Crystal Rice: I’ve been fortunate to be influenced by a diverse range of authors throughout my life, from those I encountered as a child to those I’ve had the privilege of knowing personally. Growing up in a creative household, writing felt like an inherent part of my upbringing. I spent much of my childhood in the library, where I was deeply inspired by the work of authors like Stan and Jan Berenstain (The Berenstain Bears), Dr. Seuss, and Mary Hoffman (Amazing Grace). Their stories, rich with both imagination and meaningful life lessons, left a lasting impression on me.
As I transitioned into writing professionally, I found a particular connection with Jane O’Connor’s Fancy Nancy series. Her ability to create charming, relatable characters and bring humor and elegance into her stories greatly influenced my approach to writing for children.
I’ve also been lucky to know and learn from other authors personally, whose guidance and perspective have helped shape my creative journey. These various influences have all contributed to how I approach storytelling—with empathy, a sense of playfulness, and a deep respect for the reader.
Dr. Brittney Clinton: As you were developing your book, were there any specific mentors, writing groups, or communities you turned to for advice or guidance?
Crystal Rice: As I developed my book, I was fortunate to receive guidance from experienced mentors who helped me refine my manuscript and navigate the writing process. I also relied on "YouTube University" for tutorials and industry insights, which were invaluable in addressing specific challenges and deepening my understanding of the craft.
Working in pediatrics also played a significant role in shaping my writing. The children I worked with served as great inspiration for character imagery, offering a wellspring of creativity. Additionally, I am blessed to have a supportive network of family and friends who have been with me throughout this journey. Their belief in my success fuels my drive, and knowing I’m surrounded by people who want me to thrive makes me even more determined to succeed.
Dr. Brittney Clinton: How do you balance the influence of your literary idols with your own unique voice and style when writing?
Crystal Rice: I admire authors like Dr. Seuss and Jane O'Connor for their ability to create relatable characters, but I focus on incorporating my own experiences into my writing. As a child, I didn’t see many characters who looked like me—a little Black girl. My book, The Little Lady Finds Her Manners, reflects my mission to create a character with the same complexion, fuller features, and thicker hair texture. I wanted to depict a loving Black family, not the often-stereotypical portrayal of an impoverished or unloving one.
While my idols inspire me, I aim to stay true to my voice. This balance allows me to grow as a writer while maintaining my unique perspective.
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Do you follow certain literary movements, genres, or contemporary authors who you think are pushing boundaries in literature today?
Crystal Rice: Yes, I’m drawn to contemporary authors and movements that challenge traditional boundaries in literature. For example, I admire the growing #OwnVoices movement, where authors share stories from their own cultural, social, or personal backgrounds. It’s so powerful to see more diverse voices in literature, offering readers authentic, relatable experiences that have often been underrepresented.
I’m also excited by the way some writers are blending genres—mixing elements of fantasy, realism, and memoir to tell more complex, multifaceted stories. This openness to experimentation and pushing narrative boundaries is inspiring to me as an author. It encourages me to keep finding new ways to tell stories that are both personal and universal, while also pushing against the limitations of traditional genres.
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Have there been any surprising or unexpected influences—whether from personal experiences, historical figures, or other fields—that have shaped your writing process or themes?
Crystal Rice: Yes, there have been some surprising influences on my writing. One of the most significant has been my work in pediatrics. Spending time with children has taught me so much about their honesty, resilience, and unique perspectives, which deeply shape how I create characters and stories.
Movies have also been a big inspiration for me. I often find myself moved by the way films convey emotions, build relationships, and create vivid worlds. The visual and emotional storytelling in movies helps me think about pacing, imagery, and the emotional depth I want to capture in my writing.
Inspiration can truly come from unexpected places, and I try to stay open to the world around me, whether it's through children, movies, or other art forms.
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Now that you’ve published your work, are there particular voices or authors you seek out for continued inspiration or mentorship in your writing journey?
Crystal Rice: Since publishing my book, I’ve been inspired by authors who focus on children's development and the application of everyday life principles. I’m especially drawn to writers who blend meaningful life lessons with storytelling, creating narratives that teach children how to navigate the world with empathy, resilience, and self-awareness. For me, literature for young readers should not only entertain but also offer practical tools for personal growth.
I also seek out authors who explore themes of family, self-identity, and emotional intelligence. Their ability to create relatable stories that children can learn from and apply to their own lives motivates me to keep refining my craft and to create stories that are both enjoyable and impactful.
