What is your triumph and victory story?
Lucky: I have been through so many obstacles in life, but I’ve learned to treasure every obstacle because it’s always an opportunity for growth. One major setback that I thought would set me back was when I had my first heart surgery. I remember fear creeping up my spine as the doctors looked me in my eyes, saying, “We need to perform surgery on you right now, and you only have a 10 percent chance of surviving.” I was mentally hysterical, yet my exterior remained calm and sturdy.
Then I looked into my wife’s eyes and saw the pain of what she was feeling, and I could only imagine her thoughts were racing with the possibility of losing me. It was at that moment when I found the courage to remind myself of my inner strength and to see the victory at the end of the tunnel. My mindset has always pushed me through, so why would it stop now? I know it may sound crazy to some, but I saw myself waking up from the surgery, and I told myself that I would be okay.
I knew internally that my mission on this planet wasn’t complete, so I had to use my energy to heal and let the doctors do what they do best. Waking up after surgery, I was in pain but functional. I remember eating breakfast that morning and walking to and from the bathroom like nothing had happened. Of course, I had all types of tubes and wiring hanging from my body, but I knew I was okay. Now, here I am, six years later, and three heart surgeries done.
I still stand, and I am blessed to be stronger than ever. I’ve never used my setback as a crutch. Instead, I use it to fuel my fire and remind myself how blessed I am to be here, and I treasure every breath. I am on a mission to show the world that our mind is our most powerful tool if we use it wisely. I’m not claiming to be a magician or magical. I’m just saying that we humans are mysteriously beautiful creatures that don’t truly tap into our inner strength and abilities.
Whatever that means to you, I encourage you to explore it and thank me later. As the famous saying goes, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” When we do the work, the results manifest from the seeds we planted along the way.
What was your vision when you first started in your industry? How has your vision changed or remained the same at this point of your entrepreneurial/creative journey?
Lucky: I remember being a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed young man who wanted to take over the world when I first started in entertainment. I wanted to be a global rock star and share my music with the world. My vision was to be a sex symbol and seduce the world with my falsetto high notes. Yet, I didn’t realize the universe was aligning me for a different path to greatness that would bless me beyond my wildest dreams. During my time with my rock band, “The J.U.S. Evolution,” I was one of the lead vocalists, Manager, Publicist, Agent, assistant, and so much more.
I cultivated a new set of skills I didn’t realize were actual positions for a team behind musical or entertainment talent. It was the skills I used on tour and beyond with my band that allowed me to open my consulting agency and changed the way I saw the business as a whole.
I realized that I was more beneficial behind the scenes because I knew what the struggling artist’s mindset was and how to navigate through the rough patches. So now, I would say my vision hasn’t changed, but instead of helping myself or my band, I’m helping anyone who understands the value of what I can bring to the table. I now have a vision to help people succeed and connect them to the missing pieces they need for a meaningful, lasting career in their industry. In short, I would say my vision is more precise and more purposeful. I am walking in my light.
What is it in your life that has given you the most sense of purpose?
Lucky: Life has given me the most incredible sense of purpose. When you come close to losing your life in any capacity, it gives you a severe wake-up call to appreciate every moment and every breath. Every time I open my eyes and my lungs expand to breathe the fresh air, I make sure that I get up and make each moment count.
Tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us, but while we do have time, it’s our responsibility to make the most of it and to appreciate our journeys, bumps and all. There are no mistakes in life. There are only lessons and blessings. Perspective is key.
Describe a moment when your business or creative goals exceeded your expectations.
Lucky: I have surpassed many of my business and personal goals, yet the most humbling career goal was achieved recently, and I was shocked. I recently received my Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Entertainment Management from HCU in Dallas, Texas. I also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for 20 years of Community Service from the White House.
After years of giving my all to help people build their brands and careers, sometimes you can feel unseen. I’ve helped so many people excel, and I never asked for credit. Yet, my faith kept me strong, and my work was seen by people I never knew were watching. This is a blessing and an honor that I will treasure for a lifetime.
I’m still getting used to being called Dr. Lucky Church, but it’s getting easier daily. It feels good to be seen, but it feels even better to watch my clients rise beyond their wildest dreams. I love what I do, and with or without awards, I will always be humbled by the blessings that flow into my life.
Please tell us about the latest accomplishments you’re proud of.
Lucky: My most significant accomplishment outside of my recent awards is my focus on my mental health. I’ve learned to slow down when I need to and understand that it’s okay not to be okay. Yet, I know it’s my responsibility to face those issues head-on so I can be functional for my well-being. If I’m not right, how can I be there for anyone else? I have learned to rest, relax, and breathe. As simple as that sounds, it’s been beneficial in keeping me grounded and balanced. I don’t think we prioritize ourselves enough, and I’m on a mission to change that one heart and one mind at a time.
Lastly, With such a successful career already, what more do you aspire to achieve?
Lucky: I am truly blessed to have an amazing career, and I am reaching for more stars deeper in the universe. I want to get into the film industry a bit more and explore. I’ve already worked on a few great projects, but I’m still learning to navigate this realm properly. I also want to do more public speaking, write a few books, and develop a TV series about my life.
My life has been one hell of a journey, and I wouldn’t change a thing: drama and all. Every experience made me into the man I am today, and I am so thankful. I have been blessed with patience, strength, love, happiness, healing, and a hunger for knowledge. I will always keep dreaming and achieving as long as air is in my lungs.
