Nativity According to the Gospels
Written, Directed and Choreographed by Mabel P. Robinson
On the first night of Nativity According to the Gospels located at The Gallery Theatre at The Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, the community came together to witness the ageless narrative of Jesus Christ's birth, setting the stage for an unforgettable celebration of joy, hope, and solidarity.
The performance brought to life the biblical accounts of the Nativity, from the angelic announcement to the lowly birth in Bethlehem, while the gentle light of the candles embraced the audience in a comforting hug. Live music, breathtaking stage designs, and cutting-edge technological elements gave the age-old tale a new, inclusive vitality that brought people of all walks of life together in the magic of the holiday season.
The actors' portrayals of the holy family, the shepherds, the wise men, and Mary emphasized the solemnity of the occasion while also honoring the timeless values of kindness and peace. What made this year's opening night special was the play's acceptance of a broad ensemble of artists located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, which reflected the universal togetherness that the birth of Christ symbolizes. A moving reminder that Christmas is a time for unity regardless of one's origin or beliefs, the audience—composed of friends, neighbors, and family—stood in unified amazement as the story unfolded. Nativity According to the Gospels was clearly more than a simple recounting of an old narrative as the final scene unfolded, with the heavenly choir resonating through the air and a feeling of tranquility washing over the stage. It was an invitation to rejoice in the commonality of humankind, restating the age-old truth that happiness, love, and optimism can overcome any obstacle to a better future.
Dezmon Woods brings a captivating presence to the stage in this year’s Nativity According to the Gospels, playing a pivotal role that showcases his powerful talent and depth of emotion. Known for his dynamic stage performances, Dezmon infuses his character with both grace and authenticity, bringing a fresh perspective to the timeless story of Christ’s birth. His commitment to embodying the themes of hope, compassion, and unity resonates deeply with the audience, making him a standout in this year’s ensemble.
Whether delivering heartfelt lines or participating in the grand musical numbers, Dezmon’s performance is a testament to his versatility and passion for storytelling, enhancing the production’s message of universal love and peace. Early on Dezmon Woods (Pilgrim, Wiseman, & Dancer) became passionate about the performing arts. He graced the stage in Glenn High School's variation of The Nutcracker ballet and The Wizard of Oz and Parkland High School's Guys and Dolls where he was also part of the marching band auxillary, the school's Dance Movement Company, and the Choral Ensemble as well as the Men's Ensemble. Dezmon participated in the Schola Cantorum, Winston Salem State University (WSSU) Choir, and Association of Rhythmic Talent at Winston Salem State University. With the WSSU Choirs, Dezmon was able to travel both locally and abroad to such places such Nassau, Bahamas, Soweto, Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. He has carried on his stage experience with Black Nativity, The Glory of Gospel, and Nativity According to the Gospels among numerous programs. He is grateful to his family for their outstanding support throughout years.
"I am filled with both thanks and wonder as I watch Nativity According to the Gospels press forth this year—taking its place in a new venue, with fresh people and a new theater group, for the first time in its 20-plus-year existence. Black Nativity 1961's creators surely never dreamed that their youngest actor, playing the Virgin Mary, would one day continue forth and expand upon their creative legacy over 60 years later. Here in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, we are surrounded by a dynamic collection of local artists—each one of them offers unique brilliance and enthusiasm to our project. It reminds us humbly and beautifully that the spirit of the narrative, the hope, and the togetherness it stands for remains throughout time. We are not just narrating a story of the past; we are also carrying on a journey started decades ago that speaks to the hearts of every generation and to the ageless force of community, creativity, and faith." — Mabel P. Robinson, Nativity According to the Gospels Director
The Gallery Theatre proved to be the ideal venue for this production. Its intimate setting allowed audiences to feel fully immersed in the unfolding drama, while the state-of-the-art facilities elevated the technical aspects of the play. From the atmospheric lighting to the intricate set design, every detail was thoughtfully executed to transport viewers to the world of ancient Judea.
Beyond its artistic merits, Nativity According to the Gospels embodied the spirit of The Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. The center’s mission to foster connections across age groups was beautifully reflected in the cast, which featured performers ranging from children to elders. This diverse ensemble brought authenticity and relatability to the story, reminding audiences of the timelessness of its themes.
